So three of THE GIRLS volunteer as cheerleading coaches for a Harlem based little league football team. It is by far one of the most rewarding community service activities I have ever been a part of in life ! These little girls absolutely look up to us and honestly make an effort to be their very best as young adults and as cheerleaders.
HOWEVER...this is an "urban" organization. So I offer the following insight into our modus operandi.
Dear Coaches,
We had 8 girls to show up for practice yesterday.
Getting to the field is tricky, I did not know the team took public transportation to get there. I don't like that. Especially since there are some mental patients from Phyllip's Island who are on the bus as well (as I have been told). Some of the parents drop the kids off directly to the field, but for the others I want to devise a way of getting there and back without having to get on the M135 at 124th and 2nd !!!
Coach Mikki led them in stretches, review of arm positions and we went over all of the cheers. I had them running anytime someone was not in zone. Needless to say, the older girls are about done with Baby Jasmine and Baby Nicole.
I am noticing that the little girls make the rest of the girls look "off". We definitely need to work with Janice, Shani and Jamie (noticed from Saturday). The other girls are doing pretty well with feet, arm and hand placements. Of course they can be louder.
Since there is no bathroom out there, guess what ?? NONE of them had to use the restroom...WE ARE BEING DUPED !!!
I think Tuesday practices will pick up in attendance and will be beneficial. I just want to work out the travel details for the girls.
Also, we are going to have to have a meeting with the older girls regarding some parent complaints about inappropriate texting, cussing, etc. and instant messaging amongst them. I would like Deondria to sit in the meeting as well so we can ascertain what is going on and nip it in the bud. Let's save this for the next Saturday that I am there. We also need to talk to the parents about LIMITING their input at practice. The only parent who is pretty beneficial is Baby Jasmine's dad. Some parents (who will go unnamed) were at practice yesterday BLASTING Nelly "Drop Down and Get Your Eagle On" from a Boombox circa Radio Raheem of Do The Right Thing. .... so of course the little girls start dancing.... MESS !!!
I will not be at practice on Saturday, but will be there on Tuesday again. If any of you can POSSIBLY make it on Tuesdays even if its late, please come out. It's perfect spacing and turf for stunting.
Coach Mike paid for the uniforms, shoes and poms. I should have them in 3 weeks.
Hmmmm...what else ? Coach KC GIRL and Coach JUJU GIRL, please share more information about camp. Alot of the girls and other coaches have been inquiring.
ok, thats it....
